Multinational Support through Sister City Partnerships
"
the Economic Development Global Partnership Conference
is an excellent opportunity for us to learn best practices and to have
better understanding of economic opportunities as well as the barriers
to economic growth and partnership." - Mayor Shirley Franklin
The City of Atlanta, the Atlanta Sister Cities Commission (ASCC),
and CIFAL Atlanta are co-hosting the "Economic Development Global
Partnership Conference" in Atlanta from October 19-20, 2006.
The objective of the conference is to promote a catalytic role in
empowering its members throughbroadening their understanding of economic
development practices and enabling a better understanding of each
other's economic conditions. Participant Profile
Participants can also work with their respective Atlanta Sister City Committee to arrange additional individual visits and other hosted events around the conference. Local participation would be drawn from consular officials, development agencies, chambers of commerce and corporate interests in the City of Atlanta. There will be an opportunity to network with participants during the conference and at the evening sessions. Program Format The conference will be based around a best practice sharing/case study methodology that invites officials and economic development experts from the sister cities to share best practices around key economic development themes and tracks. The conference will approach the topic of economic development from an integrated perspective, using the United Nations' interactive and participatory knowledge management tool. This tool will promote best practice sharing among high-level city officials, economic development experts and business leaders. Following identification and registration of participants, an online self-assessment survey will be provided for participants to assess their city's capacity to deal with economic development issues. This survey will assist in identifying the areas where each participant wishes to expand their knowledge, as well as their strengths and expertise that could benefit other cities. The purpose of using a common tool is to enable the sharing of best practice with local governments around the world in a participatory manner, according to a common framework and language. Best Practice Areas
Additionally, the conference will feature high-level keynote plenary discussions by participating city officials, economic development experts and business leaders.
