Mark Your Calendar! A growing number of cities around the world are taking ownership of the HIV/AIDS issue and learning how they can better confront this growing threat. By 2050, 60 percent of the world’s population will be living in cities. Municipal leaders realize that dealing with this challenge is not just the responsibility of their medical and public health sector, but all sectors from civil society to business to government must be involved to make a real difference in the global response to the AIDS pandemic. Participant Profile This by invitation only high profile event will bring together a total of approximately 80 participants comprised of select delegations of top decision makers. Twenty five forward looking cities in the Americas with very diverse contexts will attend the conference, sharing best practices and experiences learned from local responses to AIDS. A team of three people will represent each city. Each delegation will consist of:
UNITAR Knowledge Management training method Cities will assess their HIV/AIDS competence before the workshop. Using a self-assessment tool, municipal leaders will stimulate a conversation between key actors from civil society, the business community, and the public sector to determine strengths and areas for improvement of their capacity to respond. The group sets priorities for improvement. As a result, they will know what experiences they want to share, and what they need to learn from others. Best Practices The workshop will focus on some of the following areas of best practices:
Program Format The forum will build on the methodology and knowledge management tool used by United Nations agencies to foster effective best practice sharing among high level city officials and international experts. Participants representing many of the largest municipalities in Central, South and North America will attend this program. This conference will be held the first three days of the conference (May 21-24). The last day of the Americas Conference, May 25, is a public day for mayors, business leaders, and leaders of civil society to share and comment on the results and findings from the previous three days. This public day will have high profile media coverage to publicize the results of the workshop. In addition to high-level key-note plenary talks by global HIV/AIDS experts, workshop participants will be able to use both the formal sessions and the informal time to learn more from each other about how to better respond to this pandemic. We look forward to your participation in this important event! For inclusion in the 2006 City AIDS Americas conference, participating cities must complete a self-assessment exercise.
